La Rinascente is building a 17,000 sq m building in Rome with the aim of establishing a solid base for the international expansion of the department store.
Designed to be the company’s flagship store, the scheme repositions the Italian department store at a luxury level with high-end retail brands, lifestyle concepts and food offers.
The new seven-storey building incorporates two retained facades along Via del Tritone and Via Due Macelli in the heart of Rome. Reprising its role on La Rinascente Milan and La Rinascente Cagliari, Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands is creating a distinctive destination space for the top floor and roof terraces to provide customers with food market retail in addition to restaurant, bar and cafe offers which lead onto open air roof terraces – providing some of the most spectacular views across the city.
Blurring the boundaries between the internal and external spaces is key to the concept, and realised through the ceiling and the external canopies, unified by a regular grid with varied infill elements.
The ceiling grid inside is infilled by open coffers with filled with gently waving translucent louvres diffusing natural and artificial light. The canopies over the terraces use fabric sails to provide shading.
