This stunning 50,000 sq ft fit-out in a new luxury department store on Moscow’s Tsvetnoy Boulevard provides three floors of food retail and restaurant space, including a spectacular destination rooftop café, in the six storey retail concept on the site of Moscow’s historic Central Market.
The scheme responds to the client’s brief for a highly sophisticated food retail experience, one which will be completely new to Moscow and entice shoppers to the store. The spectacular suspended ceiling of beaten stainless steel, which sits inside the external envelope and ‘wraps’ around the levels, was designed as a bespoke solution and sourced from Germany.
Highly-polished stainless steel reflects both the produce and visitors below and reflects light from the deep windows over Tsvetnoy Boulevard and the skylight on the top floor. Visible from the main entrance on the ground floor, the ceiling provides a response to the geometries of the exterior of the building, a distinct feeling to the food offer and entices shoppers to ‘look up’ as they enter. The success of the concept for the food retail meant that it was used right through the atrium and features on almost all of the floors of the multi award-winning department store.
The practice maintained a key role during the construction phases, working with the client site team and overseeing sub-contractor design development. The procurement style and multi-national site team meant that the client relied on the architecture team to manage the design development process. Site meetings, factory visits and mock up reviews during the contractor design period proved critical in maintaining quality control.
